CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

LUCIEN

Lucien rode into River Bend with Vali at his side. Feeling more optimistic than he'd felt since the shipwreck, he accompanied the blonde giant into the ludus to discuss the proposition with Braxus. They had already discussed it with Gaius. In fact, it had been Gaius' suggestion. Now all they needed was the approval of the other managers of the co-operative. Though they didn't use that word for the way they operated the loose settlement, it was a co-operative. A well run, effective co-operative.

Gaius had waited until he knew how much the jewels were worth before making the offer. It wouldn't have been viable had Lucien not had sufficient funds to buy the small forested section of land that lay between River Bend and the main road. That increasingly busy road linked Londinium to Dover.

Gaius' proposal, which he had already discussed in theory with Vali, was to bring the new estate into their co-operative. In exchange for much needed quality timber, which the new estate had in abundance, River Bend would provide the labour to clear the land for farming and build a roundhouse. Depending on the quality of the land, they would determine a suitable crop to be planted, and Lucien would receive a portion of the profits from those crops.

The idea had excited him the moment Gaius raised it, and he and Vali had ridden through the forest on the way home, determining boundaries. Now it was up to Braxus, Bull and Dath to agree to the proposal.

As they entered the ludus, Lucien became aware of the sound of fighting. But it wasn't the sound of gladiators training. He'd witnessed such training many times in-situ. This wasn't as rhythmic or as carefully controlled as that. This sounded like someone raging; flailing out, over and over again, in helpless fury. It wasn't right.

Vali must have thought the same thing, because he detoured from the office and followed the sound. They came to the arena and stopped dead in their tracks. The place was deserted, the morning training over. Only one person was there. Dressed only in a loincloth, Jason was hacking at an upright post used for sword practise. He employed no studied moves he was trained to use, but attacked relentlessly in a flurry of vicious chops in all directions.

How long he'd been destroying the log, Lucien could only guess at. Long enough to have worked up a river of sweat. Long enough to have whittled the thick post away and blunt his sword. And yet he seemed nowhere near ready to stop.

Braxus came up behind them. "He's been going at it for half an hour. Any time now he'll drop. No one can keep up that level of exertion."

"What happened?" Vali asked in concern. They all knew something had to have happened to send him into this kind of fury.

"I don't know. After training I asked him to go over to your place and pick up the new swords. He left with Bull and Cal. When he came back he grabbed a sword and started in on that post like his life depended on it.
